Lough Corrib Water Framework Directive

Client:   Galway County Council & Western River Basin District
Delivery: April 2007

MarCon developed a comprehensive, three-dimensional model of Lough Corrib to undertake conservative tracer transport simulations in order to determine pathways of pollutants. From the analysis of the results, recommendations were made for the best locations to deploy instruments for operational and surveillance water quality monitoring.

Initially, the areas suitable for the long-term instrument deployment were identified by examining flushing pathways in Lough Corrib. But MarCon's investigation revealed that seasonally, the recorded parameter values may differ substantially from the average in Lough Corrib. We were, therefore, able to identify the best locations for long-term deployments as well as seasonal measurements.
