Coasts and Estuaries Coasts and estuaries are critical to economic, social, and ecological prosperity. The coastal zone houses over 60% of the worlds population. This area of land and offshore water also contains sensitive ecological habitats and natural resources which are vulnerable to anthropogenic and environmental effects. Even seemingly minor environmental changes, when coupled with human induced effects, can create serious water quality and environmental risks. Resource and emergency managers, decision-makers, and the public require access to comprehensive, accurate, and timely information to plan, implement policy, and respond effectively to any threats to the well being of coastal and estuarine water bodies.
